Green Power Pioneers will help pupils explore the science behind climate change, its real-world impacts (such as wildfires and flooding), and how it affects people and the natural world.

Every pupil will have the chance to become a Green Power Pioneer by sharing their enthusiasm for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), renewable technologies and the exciting opportunities available in the green energy sector. They will do this by creating and delivering an assembly presentation to the rest of their school, helping to raise awareness and inspire others to become Green Power Pioneers too.

Each class will also have the opportunity to put their learning into practice during a final visit to the Durham University Energy Institute. During this visit, pupils will:

  • Take part in an interactive STEM workshop challenge.
  • Visit university laboratories and discover innovative technologies, including the Solar Car and Smart Grids.
  • Ask questions and learn from university professors and postgraduate researchers.

We have selected eight schools to take part in the Green Power Pioneers programme. All teachers and pupils within these schools will be involved in the Green Power Pioneer assembly presentations, reaching approximately 56 teachers and 1,920 pupils. Of these, eight teachers and around 240 pupils will also benefit directly from the workshops and the visit to Durham University.

To help the programme have a lasting impact, each of the eight schools will receive £500 worth of equipment. This will enable teachers to continue delivering Green Power Pioneers workshops and inspire future pupils beyond the end of the project.
