Climate Friendly Schools: NECA

Following on from successful projects in Sunderland and County Durham, the North East Combined Authority put in place funding for 31 schools in the Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland areas to complete our award-winning Climate Friendly Schools initiative.

Climate Friendly Schools is an education initiative that aims to engage schools in undertaking practical environmental action to raise awareness of and lessen the impact of the climate crisis.

‘It has been utterly fantastic working with OASES. I have struggled for years trying to get the support needed to improve our climate friendly school approach and having Sarah to help has been amazing. We have achieved more in the last 8 months than we have in 8 years. If only there were more funding for people like OASES!’

Each school chose 10 climate saving actions with the aim to become more conscious of their impact and make lasting changes. Actions chosen included building new gardens to grow food, researching sustainable technology to use in schools, learning about sustainable careers and creating swap shops for books and toys.

“The project has been amazing. Beth has been so informative and helpful and really opened our eyes to how we can be more climate and eco-friendly!”

A celebration event was held on the 17th June 2025 at Newcastle Civic Centre where schools shared their journey, took part in climate activities and received their Climate Friendly School Award for 2025.

Visit the Climate Friendly Schools website here if your school would like to take part.
