Funded by Derwent Valley AAP, OASES worked over 2 years with 10 schools in the Derwent Valley area to deliver our Climate Friendly Schools project.
Climate Friendly Schools is an education initiative that aims to engage schools in undertaking practical environmental action to raise awareness of and lessen the impact of the climate crisis. A whole school approach is required with staff, pupils, governors and the wider community involved as much as possible.
Year 1:

- Burnopfield Primary
- Ebchester Primary
- The Grove Primary
Year 2:
- St Pius Xth Catholic Primary
- Shotley Bridge Primary
- St Patrick’s RCVA Primary, Dipton
- St Patrick’s RC Primary, Consett
- Villa Real School
- Delves Lane Primary
Each school have completed 10 climate saving actions covering the 7 themes: Building, Energy, Food, Grounds, Water, Transport and Consumption.
“Our School Council enjoyed planting our new orchard this morning with some of our local residents. We planted a variety of apple trees, as well as cherry, plum and pear trees. Look out for our new orchard at the top of the MUGA. We are excited to see the fruit trees grow!”
2208 students were involved across the entire project with 185 teachers and governors receiving training on climate literacy.
In total, 38 unique actions were delivered across the 10 schools with many of these actions being continued into future academic years, leaving a legacy of sustainability and climate action in the schools, which will hopefully inspire the children to become more climate friendly and make sustainable choices as they grow.
