The Fruit-full Schools program, funded by the Big Lottery and managed by Learning through Landscapes in partnership with Garden Organic and Common Ground, aimed to connect children with nature and promote hands-on learning about local food benefits.
In collaboration with 50 secondary schools nationwide, students researched, designed, and planted community orchards, even grafting their own trees. These schools also assisted 150 primary schools in growing their orchards, fostering community engagement. Orchards planted by Fruit-full Schools will yield over 50 heritage apple varieties, benefiting more than 8,000 people.
OASES served as the coordinator for the North East region, working with five secondary schools and their partner primaries in Sunderland and County Durham, introducing new events like Apple and Blossom days and teaching grafting and tree care skills for sustainable fruit harvests in the future.
