As part of the Tyne to Tees, Shores and Seas Partnership Scheme (SeaScapes), OASES
are delivering the educational elements of two projects; coastlines and coast at war. Over three years (2021 – 2024), OASES will deliver educational workshops to KS1 and KS2 pupils from schools across the SeaScapes area. The workshops and visit will tie in with other SeaScapes projects, such as archaeological digs and shipwreck mapping, allowing the children to learn more about the heritage of their local area and take part in experience they otherwise wouldn’t get to do.
In Year 1, OASES worked with schools in Roker and Hartlepool. The pupils enjoyed the hands-on workshop activities, such as looking at shipwreck artefacts and spotting creatures in footage divers had recorded off their local coastline. They also visited the National Museum of the Royal Navy where they got to explore an 18th century seaport and HMS Trincomalee, a floating 18th century ship.
In Year 2, OASES have worked with a school in Sunderland. To tie in with local archaeology work happening at Roker Battery, OASES organised a visit to the site where the pupils met archaeologists from Tees Archaeology and got stuck in, carrying out a dig in an area of the site. The pupils found lots of interesting artefacts, including a Victorian pencil, jewellery and a clay pipe.
