OASES North East collaborated with CEED on a Derwentside AAP funded Street Trees project, engaging primary school children in mapping and learning about the variety of trees in their neighbourhoods.
OASES staff worked with six schools in and around Consett to map the location and condition of trees in their neighbourhoods. Participating classes attended workshops to learn tree identification and map usage. Each class was then taken on a tour of their local area to identify street trees, assess their age and condition, and mark their locations on the map. These maps were used to create a district-wide map assessing the need for tree planting and replacement, utilized by the Clean and Green team.
Pupils in each school explored the importance of local trees as places to play and enjoy local wildlife. They delivered assemblies to their school and parents, celebrating the significance of trees in their lives.
