5 children from Evergreen Primary School gathered around a bucket of rockpool creatures.Beyond the Classroom gave 22 Year 6 pupils from Evergreen Primary School in Bishop Auckland the opportunity to step outside the classroom, explore new environments and take on new challenges as they prepared for the transition to secondary school.

Pupils took part in three exciting outdoor experiences:

Forest Exploration – Hamsterley Forest Pupils explored the woodland through hiking, den building, and nature activities.

Coastal Adventure – Roker Beach At the coast, pupils went rock pooling, completed a beach scavenger hunt, built sandcastles and paddled in the sea. They even had the exciting experience of spotting dolphins!

Camping Residential – School Grounds For many pupils, this was the highlight of the project. Pupils helped put up tents, made hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows around the campfire. For some of the children they were spending their first night away from home.

“Thank you so much for the opportunity to take part in this project! The staff and the pupils have had an amazing time and the pupils have experienced things they have never done before” Teacher feedback

The project was supported by a £2,500 grant from The Hedley Foundation. Its impact will continue beyond the project, with the school now exploring the purchase of its own camping equipment so future pupils can benefit from residential experiences too.
