‘Children 4 Climate Change?’
Over 3 years, OASES was working with 10 schools across County Durham to deliver Climate Change sessions through the ‘Children 4 Climate Change?’ project, kindly funded by Durham University. Each school has had/will receive the following 6 sessions:
- Session 1- Introduction to Climate Change
- Session 2- Facilitating Research into Climate Change
- Session 3- Creating a script on Climate Change
- Session 4- Creating a Green Screen Video on Climate Change
- Session 5- Preparing for a Showcase Assembly
- Session 6- The Showcase Assembly to the school and parents.
‘Empowering Environmental Action’
Whilst OASES was delivering these sessions to schools, the project’s scope was extended using funding from Northumbrian Water, which was gratefully received. This enabled a total of 25 North East schools to not only complete the original sessions, but also for each of the schools to complete the John Muir Award. In order to gain the John Muir Award, each child has to discover a place, explore it, conserve it and share their experiences. The conservation element includes taking practical climate change action by planting trees in their school grounds or local area, and litter picking/clearing local watercourses, where possible.
Each class received the following 6 sessions and a family event on top of the sessions mentioned before. In some cases, the sessions will be in a different order due to changing weather:
- Session 7- Introduction to John Muir and exploring their school grounds
- Session 8- Exploring a local wild place- Getting to know nature
- Session 9- Exploring a local wild place- Using senses
- Session 10- Conserving a local wild place- Tree Planting
- Session 11- Conserving a local watercourse (where possible)- Clearing/litter picking a watercourse
- Session 12- Preparing the family share event and assembly in school
- Session 13- Delivering the family share event and assembly in their wild place.
The children involved each learned a lot about climate change and their local environment, taking home a climate change video and the ‘Discovery’ John Muir Award.
