Trees for Children is a ground breaking project delivered in partnership with Durham County Council Woodland Creations Scheme that allows children to take action to reduce our carbon footprint through tree planting on school and community woodland sites.
Durham County Council have identified community woodland sites across the county so get in touch to find out about opportunities in your area. If we don’t have a woodland site in your area we can create woodland or hedging in your school grounds!
Tree planting gives children a tangible activity they can take part in to tackle climate change and to help local wildlife.
KS2 children are planting trees as well as taking part in related learning activities from the curriculum linked project education pack.
KS1 Children collect seeds from local trees to grow their own saplings to be planted out in their school grounds. They learn about the variety of wildlife in their local area as well as hands on learning about the life cycle of a plant.
The whole school would be involved in different ways:
- There is a school assembly to explain to all of the children why we are planting trees for climate change.
- KS1 pupils take part in autumn workshops to collect local tree seeds and sow them to grow tree seedlings at school. The young trees will then be planted out in their second year of growth, either in the school grounds, at local planting sites or in local gardens.
- KS2 pupils take part in a tree planting day to plant trees either in your school grounds and/or at a local community woodland sites. We will arrange this on your behalf and provide details for getting to site where we will meet you for the tree planting sessions.
Make use of the fantastic Trees For Children Education Pack full of learning activities to explain the importance of woodlands for mitigating against the effects of climate change and the role and value of trees in our local environment. The pack contains curriculum linked activities on the topics for both key stages.
